“The Eight Rules of

Productive Marketing”

by Brian Schaeffer

Marketing IS the Key to your business’ success.

A good 70%-80% of your time spent on building your business should be premarketing planning, marketing, and post-marketing follow-up including customer service (much of which is a form of marketing).

Without marketing, you can have the most attractive, most organized business with the most in-demand products, but you’ll get virtually no sales.

No sales = no money = business failure!

If you are a home or small business owner and you don’t have a web presence, you’re missing out on a significant marketing avenue! Even the simplest of web pages can pull in orders which might have otherwise gone to a competitor.

So for those who are new to marketing, particularly internet marketing, and for the veteran marketers & IMers, I’ve developed some basic foundamental rules for marketing and online marketing.

1.) Make Contact Every 30-90 Days

Your customers, prospects and affiliates should hear from you every 30 days; but, sometimes that’s hard for a part-time marketer to do, so certainly you should contact them AT LEAST every 90 days. Beyond 90 days and many will tend to forget who you are!

A simple email, or discount certificate, or even a short piece of pertinent information will do!

2.) Remember to Track and Tweak

ALL of your advertising efforts should be tracked and analyzed. Whether you’re using Pay-Per-Click, eZine, banner, sidebar, or offline advertising (newspaper, magazine and radio), EVERYTHING should produce success data and be examined at least once a week.

Rarely does an ad’s first effort pay off. The vast majority of them will need to be tweaked for keywords, wording and word placement.

Tweaking’s good, so get creative! Track and analyze every single thing you do to each ad. Keep and rerun the most productive ads.

3.) Do Marketing Every Day

Your business makes a profit through your marketing efforts. Yes, administering your web site is important. Yes, the lines of communication to your supplier and your paperwork are important. Yes, a hundred other non-marketing things are important. BUT nothing gets sold unless you actively market. That’s why your business marketing efforts should take 75-90% or your time - at the very minimum, you should spend 50% of your time marketing your business.

So make, schedule and keep your daily marketing time inviolate! It’s the thing that’s going to make you money!

4.) Don’t Reduce Your Budget During the Slow Times

Marketing is your business’ lifeline during hot times and slow. Do Not reduce your marketing budget even during the slow times!

Decide how much you can afford on a monthly basis for your marketing efforts and stick to it through thick and thin! Include all forms of marketing; pay-per-click, eZine ads, banners on popular sites, newspaper and magazine ads, and radio ads. Experiment with all of them and choose the marketing formats which best suit your own business.

Within those areas, rerun the ads which are highly productive!

When you do have those hot times, stick a little extra money away into your marketing budget to be used for those rainy, slow periods. That way you can help smooth out your yearly marketing expenses.

5.) Don’t Overload Yourself

One of the biggest mistakes a home or small business owner can make is to take on too many projects! In marketing, that can be a recipe for disaster!

Remember Rule Number 2. You must have time to track and analyze every marketing effort. You’ll also need time to create innovative new products and services to sell. In addition, you’ll need time to do all of those mundane home office tasks. So take on just the number of activities that you can competently handle.

I’ve seen the breaking of this rule play out to the sad end many times. As small business owners we tend to continue adding new projects and tasks to our schedules without ever eliminating older ones.

One of the best ways to maintain your balance is to do a monthly review of all your discretionary activities (those that are not absolutely necessary to run your business) and eliminate doing the ones which produce the least results.

6.) Don’t Neglect Your Prospecting Funnel Procedure

Most folks will first view your home business with neutrality, if not downright suspicion. I’ve rarely seen a small business start right off skyrocketing because of complete acceptance on the part of the public. That’s okay. It’s a natural part of building a business.

From that first state, some will become prospects, then customers, then repeaters and finally referrers. With the newly referred, the process - the prospect funnel - starts all over again.

Whatever you do, make sure that your prospect funnel is lovingly maintained and nurtured!

7.) DO NOT QUIT!

Most marketing research indicates that a marketer must present their offer 5-7 times to a prospective customer before that customer makes a purchase.

So don’t quit a marketing activity before it gets a thorough chance to perform! Repeat, repeat, repeat. If, after all your honest efforts, an activity or project just isn’t panning out, THEN you can drop it and move on to a new one.

This same rule applies to prospects also. 5-7 times before you move on to the next possible customer unless they ask you not to contact them again.

8.) ALWAYS Thank Your Prospects and Customers

And do it often!

There are numerous ways to offer thanks; a gift or discount certificate, a freebie at Starbucks, free shipping on their next purchase, or even just a short email.

Keep your thanks short, but very sincere. Use kind words and focus on their actions for which you’re giving thanks.

If you follow these eight simple rules for productive marketing, you’ll see your business grow and become self-sustaining.

Become a Home Business Success Story...

http://webzoom.freewebs.com/chris586/info.txt

The only way to keep up with the latest about Home Business is to constantly stay on the lookout for new information. If you read everything you find about Home Business, it won't take long for you to become an influential authority.

Success with any small business relies totally on you. It's up to you to put in the hours, do your homework, come up with new customers and deal with any problems. And if that's not enough, here's something else, something big. Doing this will mean the difference between your success or failure at working from home for yourself.

Believing in yourself will allow you to create a profitable home-based business. You will no longer feel shy about making business contacts (also known as networking). You will be able to get past any pre-conceived limitations you have regarding how much money you can earn or how successful you can become. This can be a big stumbling block for some people.

Having self-confidence will allow you to take calculated risks. A small business owner that does not take risks will never achieve much. Others will notice your confidence, and will be drawn to you for advice, joint business ventures, articles, products and more. You will be able to see 'the big picture', tapping into a never ending source of motivation and ideas.

You will have a much happier life all around. Positivity will follow you always, where ever you go, whatever you do. You will even be able to bounce back from failures and major obstacles more easily than you would have before. And what you learn from your failures will make your more successful, sooner.

Hopefully the information presented so far has been applicable. You might also want to consider the following:

So how can YOU begin to believe in yourself. First, set small goals and reach them, one by one. Start with a 'to do' list. Your confidence will grow when you see that you are slowly scratching off each task from your list. Then set larger goals and reach those. Now you're rolling, and it's time for you to set even higher goals, and then do what you have to do to achieve them.

Another great way to build your confidence is to read "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill. If you don't start to believe in your abilities after that, there's not much more advice I can give you. This book is the ultimate 'believe in yourself' guide for any aspiring business owner or entrepreneur. It's the real deal. You can find it anywhere for under $10US.

When you realize that you really CAN achieve anything that your mind can conceive, you have learned to believe in yourself and your ability to make things happen.

As long as you don't give up, you will get what you want.

It never hurts to be well-informed with the latest on Home Business. Compare what you've learned here to future articles so that you can stay alert to changes in the area of Home Business.

MANAGING YOUR TIME BETWEEN WORK & HOME

When you first begin your business, everything is fine and dandy. It's like

bringing home the new baby from the hospital. Everyone visits to see the new

baby. Everyone thinks the baby is cute and wants to hold it. Everyone "oohs"

and "awes." After a few months though, the newness wears off. Now it's time

to get down to raising this new baby and preparing him or her to be success-

ful for their role in life.

A new business suffers about the same type of beginning. You talk the

decision over with your family and involve them in hearing your initial

business plans. Everyone gets excited and tells you to "go for it." Everyone

agrees to help out and the whole house is buzzing about with visions of big

bank deposits dancing in their heads. After a few months though, the newness

wears off. Since you probably haven't made any money, family members may grow

tired and discouraged. They begin degrading your motives for opening the

business in the first place. They may even embarrass you and make you feel

like a total failure without even realizing it.

Eventually, if you stay with the business and exclude the family, they will

begin feeling rejected. A spouse may be upset because you don't go to bed the

same time you used to. He or she may pressure you into spending more time

with them and the children. You love your family and don't want to hurt them

but you don't want to hurt your business either. You are torn between two

decisions, and sometimes this decision is extremely difficult to make.

What are you supposed to do? It's only common sense, if your spouse gets ill

and you have to take care of him or her, that this situation would demand

more attention than your business. But, most situations are not this severe.

Often times, family pressures only come from the fact that the family member

feels left out and rejected. Naturally, when you are building your business,

your time is occupied in this field _ much more than when you didn't have a

business. Your spouse may be used to falling asleep with you while watching

television. You can still do this! Just take a break and watch television

with your spouse until he or she falls asleep. In turn, he or she should have

the understanding that you will probably be working on your business for a

few hours while they are sleeping. Give a little!

If the children are used to you spending more time with them, try and involve

them in some aspect of your business. Take them to the post office with you

to pick up your mail. Talk with them about school or other things that

interest them while you're both in the car. Ask them to drop the mail in the

mailbox while you are cleaning out your post office box. Even a small amount

of responsibility in your business builds up a respect for your work and they

will give you more space when you need to take time away from them.

If your children are young _ take a nap when they are asleep and work longer

hours after they go to bed at night. If you work a full-time job, take some

lunches by yourself and study your business-related materials. You'd be

amazed how much research and new ideas you can come up with in 1 hour at

lunch undisturbed over a peanut-butter sandwich. Save money too! Carry a

mini-cassette recorder or pad of paper with you every place you go. Write

down ideas that come into your mind and review these ideas while eating

supper or watching television. I'm sure you can find time to build your

business _ it just takes a little thought. It may not always be the amount

of time you want and need _ but you can squeeze some time in somewhere. Just

find out "what" method works the best for you!

There are a lot of excellent books on the market about managing your time

successfully. Find one and read it. Your family, friends and other human

relationships are very, very important to your mental attitude. Don't

alienate them completely. Just find ways you can enjoy the best of both

worlds and everyone will be happy _ including you and your business.

ARE YOU WASTING OR INVESTING YOUR TIME?

Time is the most precious value we have. Time is the greatest equalizer of human beings. If we don’t want to admit this and to treat time with respect, then we can only lose. It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor, healthy or sick, you will only have 24 hours a day either way, and you should try to use them wisely.

Most of the time, we waste our time and energy worrying and thinking about things like how to win more money and how to lead a better life. Well, when we do this we usually forget about the most important thing – the time to live our life in. A wise man will always tell you: “You can always make more money, but you can never buy more time”.

How often are we aware of the ways we invest our time? And the word “investment” is the most accurate because the way we choose to spend our time, is a true investment in ourselves and our own lives. And you will never find the true value of time in the way people around you act and talk.

People usually spend hours in front of the TV, or they spend a lot of time browsing the net with no purpose whatsoever. Some of us even try to steal more time at the cost of many healthy sleep hours. If you wake up earlier in the morning just to smoke a few cigarettes and to fill your self up with coffee so you won’t feel sleepy, it doesn’t mean you have extra quality time.

Also, inefficient work or spending more hours at work that you have to is equal to lending your life to someone else.

Everyone always says things like: “I’m just counting the hours to go home” or “I wish it were Friday” on a Monday and so on. These are just signs that those persons usually waste their time. If you organize your time efficiently and if you choose to do only activities that motivate us somehow, then we will find ourselves able to work everyday without feeling tired or sleepy.

At any moment that you just let time pass by you, think about what the Romans said :”Carpe Diem” – it has a great meaning for our everyday life, it means “Live the day” or better said “Organize your day”. Make more time to analyze the way you invest or waste your time. And never forget that you can’t tell anything about tomorrow so “Carpe Diem!”
